Three Horizons Practice

This tool builds on the Three horizons, Purpose tool and helps you plot a pathway through current practice towards a new horizon or future.Three horizons’ is a simple and intuitive framework for thinking about transformation and how to enact change. Through exploring the ‘Three Horizons’ of the present (H1), the future (H3) and transition space (H2).

Building on the critique of the current humanitarian system, reflect on what elements or practices are essential to keep.

Take note of where/what seeds of the future that we’re working towards exist already exist and then the pathways to change.

How to use this tool

Step 1

Start by confirming the time horizon you’re thinking about as group. Is it five years? Thirty years? Or are you working to extend your thinking to seven generations from now? Add this to the time horizon box in the template or it you’re building on the Three horizons, Purpose template keep it the same.

Now that you’ve mapped out the critique of the current humanitarian system, reflect on what elements or practices (activities, programmes, processes) from the current system and ways of working are essential to sustain and those that can be reused. Capture these in box 3 and box 4 in the template.

Step 2

Reflect on where/what seeds of the future that we’re working towards exist already in your practices (activities, programmes, processes). Add these to box 5 in the template.

Step 3

Lastly, reflect on our Start Network strengths (networker, funder, innovator, influencer), as well as your groups’ strengths.

What changes can we make to our practices (activities, programmes, processes) to disrupt existing patterns? What changes can we make to our practices to move towards our desirable future? Use these to build out the transition space (H2), capturing this to box 6.
