Redistribute Power

REDISTRIBUTE POWER

A system is made up of lots of visible and invisible power dynamics. These power dynamics influence where decisions get made, whose involved in those decisions and how resources flow through the system. Redistributing who holds the power and influence in a system is one of the most important steps in creating change and moving towards a more locally-led humanitarian aid sector.

Questions to consider asking:

Current: Understand who holds power in the system and how it is being used (positively or negatively).

Questions to consider asking:

Future: Explore ways to redistribute power and move towards a more localised and equitable system.

  • How do we imagine power appearing differently? What would need to change in order to support/ achieve the vision or purpose we’ve set out as our part of the system?
  • How can you align your systems change work with the ambitions and actions set out in our anti-racist and decolonial framework? > See the Anti-racist and decolonial framework tool
  • What ideas or experiments necessary for system change, related to power sharing could you test out? And what would we be seeking to learn or observe as a result? > Use the Portfolio of experiments and Innovation process tools
